MikonoYetu Centre for Creativity and Innovation is a women-led, grassroots non-profit organization which seeks to empower women in Tanzania. The organization’s head office is in Mwanza, while its geographical coverage extends to the Mwanza, Dodoma, and Mbeya regions in Tanzania.
MikonoYetu is committed to both economic empowerment and sustainable development. The organization seeks to economically empower girls and women to access, own, and control land resources more productively and profitably, but also sustaining the environment to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change. MikonoYetu supports women and encourages them to take control over natural resources and capital. The income they generate not only contributes to their wellbeing, but also their children’s, which ultimately influences the nation’s future economic growth.
MikonoYetu also focuses on gender equality as a tool for sustainable development. Gender equality refers to women and men receiving equal value, respect, and treatment. MikonoYetu targets women and girls as the chief beneficiaries, particularly those in rural areas engaged in agricultural, livestock, cultural tourism and environmental conservation activities.
MikonoYetu engages in the following strategies:
Increasing awareness among women, girls, and the greater public on land rights.
Advocating for everyone’s right to own and control natural resources.
Supporting the establishment and extension of small-scale business ventures owned by women and girls.
Enhancing the capacities of communities in natural resource management and environmental conservation techniques.
