There are considerable differences in the ability for women and men to access economic opportunities and to exert power over economic structures in their societies. With our core focus on women and girl’s empowerment, MikonoYetu is widely recognized in supporting women and girls to establish small probiotic yoghurt (FITI) enterprises. The goal is to produce the highest quality probiotic yoghurt in Tanzania at affordable prices for community members.
Additionally, MikonoYetu encourages the empowerment of women by sharing ‘jiko la jamii’ social enterprise skills and knowledge. Local women (“Yogurt Mamas”) become entrepreneurs and community leaders through managing their own sustainable businesses. In collaboration with the Small Industries Development Organization (SIDO), trainees (the majority whom are women) are provided with a certification, as well as support to comply with small scale industry regulations set by the Tanzania Food and Drug Authority (TFDA) and the Tanzania Bureau of Standards.
